The leadership team at Infraredx is a group of highly experienced individuals who bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the company.

Donald Southard
President, Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Southard joined Infraredx as president and chief executive officer in early 2011, bringing more than 30 years of sales, marketing and leadership experience to the company. Most recently, he was chief executive officer of Zonare Medical Systems, a company focused on developing and marketing premium performance ultrasound imaging systems. There from 2004 until 2010, he led the company’s first product launch and successfully grew sales to $50 million. From 1996 to 2004, Mr. Southard served as president of Datascope Corp., a global manufacturing and distribution company for medical capital equipment and disposable products. Prior to that, he was vice president of sales and marketing for Elscint Inc., a worldwide supplier of diagnostic medical equipment, president and chief executive officer of Serviscope Corp., a venture-backed supplier of cost-effective maintenance service and other cost-containment products to the medical imaging industry, and vice president of sales and marketing at Toshiba Medical Systems, Inc., where he oversaw U.S. medical operations. From 1981 to 1989, Mr. Southard worked at Philips Medical Systems, Inc., where he joined as eastern zone sales manager and rose to vice president of sales. He began his career at IBM, spending ten years at the company in sales and marketing positions of increasing responsibility. Mr. Southard holds a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Alabama and an Executive MBA from Babson College.

James E. Muller, M.D.
Founder, Chief Medical Officer, Chairman of the Board
Dr. James E. Muller serves as CEO and chief medical officer of Infraredx. For more than 25 years, Dr. Muller conducted research at the Harvard Medical School on the causes of heart attacks. In 1989, he introduced the concept of "vulnerable plaque" to describe those coronary artery plaques likely to disrupt and cause cardiac events. He co-founded Infraredx in 1998 after a detailed search to find the optimal technology to identify LCPs suspected to be vulnerable plaques. In 2005, he resigned from his position as professor of medicine to conduct full-time work at Infraredx. He is the author of multiple articles related to vulnerable plaque, the leading cause of death in developed countries.
Dr. Muller was one of three American co-founders of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) the organization awarded the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize. He has extensive management experience from this work, along with his prior leadership of cardiovascular organizations and clinical trials.

Jason Bottiglieri
Vice President of Sales
Mr. Bottiglieri joined Infraredx as vice president of sales; he has over 15 years of medical device sales and sales management experience. Prior to joining Infraredx in August 2011, Mr. Bottiglieri was as Eastern Region Manager for Medtronic in their Cardiovascular Business Unit. Prior to Medtronic, he held several different positions with Cordis Cardiology, a Johnson & Johnson Co., where he started as a sales representative in Boston and was later promoted to National Training Manager and New England Regional Manager. Mr. Bottiglieri holds a B.S. Degree in Chemistry from Florida Atlantic University


Steve Chartier
Vice President of Operations, Regulatory, and Quality
Mr. Chartier joined Infraredx in 2007 as director of clinical and regulatory affairs and, since June 2008, has served as vice president of clinical and regulatory affairs. Prior to joining the company, Mr. Chartier was the director of preclinical development and regulatory affairs at NUCRYST Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Prior to this, he held positions of increasing responsibility at Biogen Idec and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Mr. Chartier is regulatory affairs certified as a member of the Regulatory Affairs Professional Society. He holds a B.A. from Saint Anselm College.


Grant Frazier
Vice President of Marketing
Mr. Frazier has served as vice president of marketing at Infraredx since March 2010. Prior to joining Infraredx, Mr. Frazier served as vice president of marketing for Volcano Corporation. Throughout his 20-year career within the medical device industry, Mr. Frazier has also served as vice president of marketing and business development for Bridge Medical Inc., Careside Inc. and Mobile Technology Inc., and director of strategic marketing for Alaris Medical Systems. Mr. Frazier holds a B.S. in management science and engineering from Stanford University and an M.B.A. from the Anderson School of Management at University of California, Los Angeles.


Jeffrey Mazur, CPA
Vice President of Finance
Mr. Mazur has served as vice president of finance at Infraredx since August 2010, after joining the company in 2005 as corporate controller. Prior to joining Infraredx, Mr. Mazur was the divisional controller at NetSilicon, Inc, a subsidiary of Digi International. Prior to that, Mr. Mazur worked in various financial and accounting capacities for Thermo Fisher Scientific, Inc. Mr. Mazur earned his CPA while working for PriceWaterhouseCoopers. He holds a B.S. in business administration from Boston University.

Stephen Sum, Ph.D.
Vice President of Research and Development
Dr. Stephen Sum joined InfraReDx in 2005 as a senior scientist before serving as director of biomedical systems in 2010 and vice president of research and development beginning in December 2011.  Prior to joining InfraReDx, Dr. Sum was a senior scientist at MediSpectra where he helped develop an optical device for the detection of cervical cancer. Dr. Sum holds a B.Sc. in applied chemistry from the University of Waterloo, an M.Sc. in information and systems science from Carleton University, and a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from the University of Delaware.
